Expressive Arts Therapy

Expressive Arts Therapy (EAT) is based on the belief that the creative process can help people access their emotions, thoughts, and experiences in a safe and supportive environment. When people express themselves creatively, they can to tap into their subconscious mind and gain insights into themselves that they may not be able to access through traditional talk therapy.

In the journey of self-awareness and healing, EAT plays a pivotal role in facilitating a significant creative process for both expressing and uncovering one's true self. Multiple studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of arts therapy in delving into emotions, reducing levels of anxiety and depression, boosting self-esteem, and aiding in the management of various psychological conditions, including ADHD, Dementia, Autism, and PTSD. Clients are encouraged to establish a connection with their inner selves by utilizing a range of art materials, including paints, crayons, clay, markers, pastels, and pencils, as mediums for creative expression. This approach not only allows clients to articulate their emotions, but also fosters a deeper comprehension of their feelings through artistic and creative means. Image is psyche’s first language and it is through the creation or play with image that we can better understand the layers of meaning of emotion, memories and processes. Ultimately, EAT serves to heighten self-awareness, foster personal development, nurture coping abilities, and enhance cognitive function.

The focus is on removing the inner critic and witnessing the internal process, not the parentheses “art” product. No art experience necessary. Come with a beginners, mind and playful spirit, and expect “aha” moments.

EAT HOW IT HELPS .jpg

"One of the primary advantages of art therapy lies in its ability to enable individuals to convey memories and emotions through imagery, which can be challenging or even impossible to convey verbally. Traumatic memories encompass more than just cognitive aspects, and sensory experiences like art therapy not only offer a means of expression, but also a way to externalize these distressing memories." - (Gerteisen, 2008). Through art therapy, individuals are empowered to access inner resilience by channeling their thoughts and feelings into visual representations, thereby unveiling unconscious traumatic memories in a controlled and gradual manner.

This approach provides a safe perspective for reviewing these images, thus aiding in improved emotional regulation. Consequently, clients are presented with opportunities to delve into fresh insights and confront unconstructive thought patterns. This allows for new perspectives and more clarity, empowering the individual to align with their inner truth and heal. Additionally, art therapy exerts a positive influence by promoting relaxation and mitigating anxiety and stress. "The relaxation it induces reduces amygdala activity, a fundamental brain component responsible for managing stress-related emotions" (Brooks, 2014)."
